City of London St. George Indian Orthodox Church

England, United Kingdom

The St George's Indian Orthodox Church, London is a church under the UK, Europe, and Africa Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India.

The Indian Orthodox church has had a presence in London since the 1970s and used to celebrate Holy Eucharist at St. Andrew-by-the-wardrobe Church near Blackfriars every Sunday. The Indian Orthodox community has been fortunate to continue their service at this church since 1978.

After the parishioners purchased their own church in Brockley, London, the worship at St. Andrew-by-the-wardrobe Church continued under the spiritual guidance of St. Gregorios Church, Brockley and the generosity of the Church of England.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the worship at St. Andrew-by-the-wardrobe Church was disrupted for a few months. However, with the help of the Church of England and others, a new place of worship was found at St. Margaret Pattens Church of England, Eastcheap. The Holy Eucharist continues at St Margaret Pattens since 27 November 2022.

During his episcopal visit on 02 October 2022, the then Diocesan Bishop HG. Dr. Mathews Mar Thimothios Metropolitan declared this as a new congregation and it was officially named the 'St George's Indian Orthodox Church, City of London'. His Grace also appointed Very Rev. Fr Abraham George Cor-Episcopa as the Vicar.

On the 1st of January 2023, the church began its service as a new congregation with the blessings and benediction of Abraham Mar Stephanos Metropolitan. We are deeply appreciative of the continuous support and guidance from our Diocesan Bishop, H.G Abraham Mar Stephanos Metropolitan.

From its humble beginnings as a small community, our congregation has grown to include 70 families. Every Sunday, we welcome new individuals, including students, to worship with us at our church in the heart of London. It is with great pride and honour that we serve our community in London and carry on the legacy of service that began in the 1970s.
